Tesla Roadster flying car explained, upside down and flipped

Fans held the Roadster to the wall and air jets flipped it, with a computer doing the driving. No drone involved.

On 15 Oct, Tesla showed its new Roadster at a SpaceX test site in Texas. The car drove up a curved wall until it was upside down, flipped off, and landed.

Everyone assumes it flies like a drone. It doesn't. Two separate tricks did the work.

Trick one, fans that glue the car to the road

Fans under the car suck the air out, a bit like a vacuum cleaner. Seals around the edges stop air sneaking back in.

With the air under the car pulled out, the air outside does the pushing. It presses the car onto the road. That push is called downforce, and Tesla says it's strong enough to hold the car upside down.

That's how the car stays on a curved wall instead of sliding off it. The fans and seals work as a pair. One removes the air and the other keeps it from coming back.

Trick two, cold gas thrusters

Grip gets the car up the wall. It doesn't explain how a car spins in mid-air once it leaves the surface.

For that, the car carries a tank of squeezed air. Let the air out through small jets and the car moves the other way, the same way a balloon shoots off when you let go of it. Short blasts rolled the car over and landed it.

This is called a cold gas thruster. There's no fire. It's just gas leaving a tank through small jets, and the car moves in the opposite direction.

If you've ever let go of an inflated balloon, you've already seen the whole mechanism. The tank is the balloon, the jets are the opening, and the car is what gets pushed.

Who was driving, and when you can buy one

Nobody was inside. A computer flew the stunt, and it was programmed. So read the demo as a controlled run of the two tricks, with no driver making calls mid-air.

Musk says production starts in 2028. That's his statement, so treat it as a claim and not as a delivery date you can plan around.

What to take from it

Remember the split. Downforce from fans and seals keeps the car on a surface, and cold gas thrusters from a tank of squeezed air change how it moves once it's off the surface. Next time a clip claims a car "flies", ask which of the two you're looking at.
