GitHub contribution graph: one day or day one?

My graph was almost empty in 2022. Picking day one and committing one at a time is what changed it.

My GitHub contribution graph for 2022 was almost empty. That's the whole before picture, and it's a useful one.

The reel has one line on screen: "one day or day one?" The two phrases use the same words in a different order. One means someday, and the other means today.

What the graph shows

A contribution graph is a record, not a plan. It doesn't care what you intended to build or what you had open in a tab. It shows what you actually did, and an almost empty year shows that plainly.

That can sting a little. But the empty year is also the cleanest starting point you can get. There's nothing to maintain and nothing to catch up on. You just have a grey graph and a decision.

One day versus day one

"One day" is the version where you start when conditions are right. You wait for a free weekend, a better idea or a calmer month. The graph stays grey while you wait, because waiting doesn't make commits.

"Day one" is the version where you pick a start date and treat it as the first entry. It doesn't need to be a big start. It only needs to be a start.

In my case, 2022 was the "one day" year. After that, I picked day one.

What kept it going

The part that mattered came after the decision. I kept showing up, one commit at a time.

That phrase is worth taking literally. One commit is a small unit of work. It's small enough to finish on a tired day, and small enough that skipping it feels silly. A graph that goes from grey to green is built from lots of those small units, not from a few heroic ones.

There's a practical angle too. If your goal is "build something big," you can always find a reason it isn't the right day. If your goal is "make one commit," the bar is low enough that the reasons run out.

What to do with this

Look at your own graph honestly. If part of it is grey, you don't need to explain it to anyone, and you don't need to fix the past. Pick a day one and make a commit.

If you know someone whose graph is still grey, send them the reel. And if you've already turned yours green, I'd like to hear about it. Is your graph green yet?
